Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then
Opens Aug 12, 2010
Filmmaker Brent Green visits Ragtag to present his debut animated feature film (75 min.), a love story about two lonely souls, Leonard and his wife Mary from just before they meet in a car crash through the latter’s eventual death. Gravity unfolds through a series of flickering stop-motion images, in which live actors jitter their way through the film’s hand-built sets while they narrate the action on the soundtrack. The aesthetic model Green seems to have in mind is kin to Guy Maddin’s meticulous image manipulations and the hand-made fantasy recreations of Michel Gondry’s The Science of Sleep. “A tinkerer’s ode to a tinkerer, and a romantic’s tribute to a romantic, Brent Green’s Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then radiates an oddball homemade charm.” (Rachel Saltz, N.Y.
