The rapturously received opening night selection of this year's Cannes Film Festival, Moonrise Kingdom is Wes Anderson's (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums) delightful, much-anticipated return to live-action filmmaking after 2009's animated adaptation of Fantastic Mr. Fox. Set in 1965 on a tiny island near the New England coastline, Moonrise tells the story of Sam and Suzy, two 12-year-olds who fall in love and run away. The town (behold: Bill Murray! Frances McDormand! Edward Norton! Harvey Keitel! Tilda Swinton! Bruce Willis!) panics, as it undertakes a search-and-rescue mission to recover the two lovebirds. Combining Anderson's glorious visual style with a knockout score of classic Benjamin Britten pieces, Moonrise Kingdom is one of the summer's must-sees.
"One of Mr. Anderson's supreme achievements. It's wondrously beautiful, often droll and at times hauntingly melancholic." (Manohla Dargis, New York Times)
